What the flat price includes (and what it does not)

Usually included: delivery, a 7-10 day rental period, pickup, disposal and a weight allowance (Dumpsters.com).

Usually extra:

  • Overage weight - billed per ton above the allowance, from the landfill scale ticket.
  • Extra days - a daily fee after the rental period.
  • Permits - street placement needs a city permit; Dumpsters.com cites $20 to $150 or more depending on the municipality.
  • Special items - mattresses, appliances and tree stumps can carry surcharges.

Why prices vary so much by city

The biggest variable is what the hauler pays the landfill. EREF’s 2023 analysis of 342 US landfills found average municipal solid waste tip fees of $84.44/ton in the Northeast vs $43.18/ton in the Southeast. A 20-yard with 3 tons included carries about $253 of disposal cost in the Northeast and $130 in the Southeast before the truck even moves. See landfill tipping fees.

How to get an accurate quote

  1. Pick the size

Use the dumpster size calculator - heavy debris may need a smaller can with a bigger allowance.

  2. Ask for the allowance and per-ton overage in writing

Compare quotes on the same tons.

  3. Confirm rental days and the extra-day fee

Projects slip; know the daily rate.

  4. Ask about prohibited items and surcharges

Tires, batteries, paint and appliances are common exclusions.

  5. Sort out the permit

Driveway placement usually needs none; street placement usually does.

Which size do you need?

Pick the project, enter its size, and get a container size plus an estimated weight. Weights use US EPA volume-to-weight factors for loose debris.

Estimate only. Heavy debris (dirt, concrete, shingles) usually hits the weight limit before the container is full, and many haulers restrict heavy loads to 10-yard containers. Confirm with your hauler.
